The negative effects of music + how different types of music plays a role in mental illnesses

Many people listen to different genres of music that they themselves enjoy and makes them happy. Some might enjoy listening to pop, some like hip hop, while others might enjoy country, K-pop and rock music. However, it’s no secret that different types of music can have different effects on the listener depending on their mood. Listening to happy songs, you’ll more liking to feel cheerful. Listening to sad songs, you’ll probably feel down and unhappy. However, while there are many positive effects to music such as reducing anxiety and stressful thoughts, there are multiple downsides to listening to certain types of artists.

The Negative effects artists and their music have on their listeners?

A topic or persona somebody peruses within their craft can deceive and persuade their listeners to act or think a certain way. Examples like this would be the musician, Billie Eilish. Her old music had lyrics which expressed feelings of depression and Loneliness. This influenced her listeners to act and to be somewhat depressed. Many people expressed their confusion online. With so many of her fans seeming to be or act as if they were depressed.

The same could be said the rappers of today. Many of them seem to rap about the same negative topics which has drastic effects on the listener’s behaviour and outlook on life as a whole. They speak about being depressed, taking multiple narcotics to numb their pain, being unloved by nobody, having their hearts broken, and having mental health problems. This type of genre garnered attention during the 2010’s but exploded in popularity in the year 2019. It has since been labelled Emo Rap. Several rappers who fit into this sub section would be the artists. Lil Peep, XXXTentacion, Trippie Redd and many more who all seems to rap about the same things. With the late XXXTentacion even having an album called ‘Bad Vibes Forever.’

When hearing certain types of songs with rather negative effects, it can set off bad memories. Such as a dark time in somebody life that had been hidden in the back of your mind. I myself have experienced these feelings when listening to songs like Just Take My Wallet by Jack Stauber and known several people who can’t listening to certain songs without becoming ridden with sorrow.

How Can We Stop These Negative Effects That Music Have?

The ways we can stop these negative effects is to try our best not be influenced by both the musicians and the artists as role models, we should try to listen to more positive and more uplifting songs which will not only improve our mental health, but how we act and our overall outlook on life as a whole.
