Suffering in silence is one of the hardest things you can go through. To separate yourself, avoid help, and stress your mind will drastically worsen your situation. It is extremely important to find help to speak out to. In this article, I will go through the consequences of suffering in silence, why you need to seek help, and different solutions to explore, including things like therapy, and socialising.
Consequences
Everyone needs to find someone to talk to if they are suffering with mental health. Not being able to open, only worsens your situation. This will distance yourself from everyone even more, making it even harder to speak out. It could also build up on things like trauma, stress (how stress can cause things like stress eating, lack of eating, and anxiety).
Firstly, not being able to open about yourself to someone will only push yourself further from everyone. Overtime, you will plunge yourself into loneliness. This severely declines your situation, as it makes getting help feel harder, and feel like you are on your own. Staying silent will only stop you from getting the help, and support you need. Overtime, feeling lonely could lead to things like difficulty concentrating, and becoming more pessimistic.
Secondly, your stress levels will increase, and it will weigh down on you more.
Stress
Stress can lead to things like obesity, as it could lead to emotional eating. This is when you start to eat unnecessarily, due to feeling nervous. Feeling stressed too frequently will lead to more nervous eating. This can also cause diabetes. On the other hand, to some it can lead to them eating less, making their bodies lack the nutrients and calories needed. This can cause extreme weight loss, meaning you are damaging your own body, and are losing your energy resources, which will make you feel even more drained, and tired.
It also makes you prone to mental health issues like depression, and anxiety.
Trauma
Trauma is something you can get if you do not open about your mental health. This is something you can develop if you have suffered from an incident, or situation that has mentally scarred you. Trauma is one of the biggest barriers when trying to overcome depression. This is because it makes some situations feel hard to deal with, whilst also making you feel fatigued. In extreme cases, it could lead to post traumatic stress disorder. Symptoms of PTSD are getting frustrated easily, feeling guilt about past issues, regularly having nightmares about things, and being unable to concentrate. If you feel you have any symptoms of PTSD, you must seek help, and contact your local GP. Therefore, ignoring an issue like trauma for too long, can lead to extreme consequences. If you do feel you have any symptoms, you must get help from ideally a GP, or therapist.
Different ways to find help
Seeking help is one of the best ways to aid your mental health, for various reasons. Firstly, having support from those around you could make you feel like you are not on your own. Having family members, friends, or colleagues to help your situation is good as they can help you with even the smallest things that can pile up on your mind. For example, financial issues, having someone to talk to, and socialising. This will suppress your stress levels and will reduce how stressed you feel. Therefore, you need to let people you trust know what you are going through, and they can help you in different ways.
Therapy
Another way is therapy, one of the most recognised, and useful solutions there are. This is one of the most effective ways as it helps you to open to someone who is a specialist and experienced enough to know what you need. Also, having a therapist to speak to regularly, can help you think clearly, and make decisions more efficiently. Many people around the world have claimed therapists have helped them with their depression, anxiety, and stress. The only downside to this is that it is a financial commitment to make.
Therefore, therapy is one of the most important ways to help you battle things like depression and anxiety. It also leads to you being clearer minded, and patient.
Getting out more into the world is another effective way to help you, as you are around so many different people, rather than being alone at home. This is good as it means there are more opportunities for interactions, whilst also being more productive, and active. Even regular things like shopping or going to the gym (exercise also helps with your mental health). During covid 19, cases of depression, and mental health doubled after the pandemic as people were stuck at home, unable to go out. This shows that simply just going back out into the world can really help you.
Conclusion
In conclusion, we have seen that suffering in silence is the last thing you should do if you are suffering with depression. This is because it separates you from people who care about you. That will then close some solutions like financial help, or emotional help. It also leads to you feeling lonely, and overwhelmed by the pressure, and stress on your own. The last consequence observed was trauma, and how it could negatively affect you to overcome depression. This meant discussing the symptoms of PTSD, and how imperative it is to seek help, if you have these symptoms.
We also went through different ways to get help, whether it is going out, and interacting with people around you, having a therapist, who is a professional, and knows just how to help you, and give you emotional support. Finally, you need to keep your friends and family close to you as they know you best, and that means they know how to help you. Therefore, you should never feel like you are battling your depression on your own, there are people who can help you, and you need to speak out to them, rather than hiding your problems from them.
