Plastic surgery involves the restoration, alteration or the reconstruction of the human body. People may get plastic surgery to get rid of a flaw and others may do it to drastically change their look. From plastic surgery you can get very natural results, whereas other times it may be extreme.
Is plastic surgery bad?
Like all surgeries, plastic surgery can impose many risks including pneumonia and blood clots. Although I wouldn’t agree that plastic surgery is bad, it can be very addicting and many people may abuse plastic surgery to the extreme. There are many types of plastic surgery you can get that have become very popular for young girls to want. What I think is bad is that there’s dozens of influencers basically promoting plastic surgery and showing how well they look, but they never seem to show the bad sides to it. A young girl seeing this won’t think any different.
Risks may include:
Bad results
Scarring
Nerve damage
Infections
Hematoma
Blood clotting
Pneumonia
Death (very rare, although still needs to be addressed)
Why do people get plastic surgery?
There are a number of reasons why people get plastic surgery, such as insecurities, influence, bullying, etc. Everyone is different and has different reasons as to why they want to change a part of themselves and that’s ok to want to do so as long as you do your research on it. Some may not have reasons at all to do so. Many people that suffer with insecurities may want to get plastic surgery as it may be affecting their mental health. Not loving yourself fully can cause depression, and this may be why people get plastic surgery so that they can completely love themselves and work on their mental health.
Why is it important to do research before getting plastic surgery?
This is important so that you get the results that you are wanting. There are many, many botched plastic surgery jobs out there, it is important to know that whoever is performing surgery on you is fully qualified and knows what they are doing. It is important to see their work beforehand, so that you can decide if that’s who you want to go through this with. Plastic surgery is a very serious thing, and if you want the best results, you better do your research beforehand.
How does plastic surgery affect mental health before and after?
Mental health disorders such as body dysmorphia, mood disorder, or a personality disorder may make people want to seek treatment to change or alter a part of their appearance. Furthermore, plastic surgery may affect your mental health afterwards due to not receiving the results you wanted/were expecting and it can also make you identify more flaws you may want to change.
Although plastic surgery can affect your mental health badly, there are benefits to it. You may find a new sense of confidence after getting work done to your body and feel really happy because of it.
What to do if after plastic surgery your mental health is affected
Your mental health is the most important thing and it is important for you to be happy with yourself and in general. If after receiving plastic surgery, your mental health has went downhill, there are many things you can do to help yourself such as:
Visiting a doctor
Speak to family and/or friends
If it’s because of your surgery, find other surgeons that may be able to help you
Seek therapy
Getting plastic surgery
Before getting any work done to your body, it is important for you to really think if this is what you want. Although you can always change it if you would like, your body will never be the same again. It is important to be doing this for yourself and no one else, and that your mental health is in check beforehand. It is very crucial to find the right, experienced surgeon to achieve the results you desire and answer any questions you may have regarding plastic surgery.
If you already suffer with mental health it may be best to speak to your GP/or therapist to identify if this is something you want, or something that your mental health is making you feel like you need to get.
Can plastic surgery improve mental health?
The answer is yes. Plastic surgery can in fact improve your mental health, especially if this flaw you want to conceal is a problem with things you do in everyday life such as oversized breasts. Getting these reduced can impact your life and make it easier for you to do things and receive better posture afterwards. Plastic surgery can give you a new sense of confidence and self-love, improving stress, depression and anxiety.
Although it is important to note that not everyone will have the same effects after receiving treatment, everyone experiences plastic surgery differently. You may have a bad experience or a good one. However I think that all depends on who you go to for these surgeries. You have to trust this person to change/alter your body after all.
How addicting can plastic surgery be?
People with underlying conditions such as body dysmorphia can lead to addictions like plastic surgery and constantly wanting to change the things on your body you don’t like. Plastic surgery is a very powerful thing, there are many TV shows out there regarding plastic surgery where it has become a very common thing to do. Anyone can get addicted to altering their appearance, especially when you have insecurities. Seeing how some people have used plastic surgery makes other people want to do it to themselves and once you go through with it, you may always be getting plastic surgery afterwards.
There are many celebrities/influencers that promote plastic surgery such as breast augmentations, Brazilian butt lift (BBL), lip fillers and so on. This may be unhealthy for young girls to see as they may look up to this influencer and maybe think they should look like that. Plastic surgery can be a very dangerous thing.
