Celebrities are an inspiration to many around the world. This is mostly due to their success, fame, looks, or if they look a lot happier than the rest of us. However, a lot of the time, we tend to forget that celebs are going through the same issue as us. Especially with things like mental health, and other struggles. During this article we will be going over Tyson Fury, and Jim Carrey’s battle with depression. We will also go over how they beat it, and their tips on what worked for them.
Tyson Fury
Tyson Fury is a British boxer and holds 3 championship belts. He is now regarded by many as one of the greatest boxers in this era. Known for his brash personality, and trash-talk, it would be hard to believe Tyson had gone through depression, but he did, and it almost led him to suicide.
After his legendary victory over Wladimir Klitschko, Tyson fell into depression. Despite having his family and kids to support him, and something to find joy in, he was not able to. He slowly pushed everyone away from him and stopped caring about everything.
This led to him wishing to take his own life. As he details, he was driving his Ferrari at 190mph towards a bridge, and all he could think about was, “I didn’t care about nothing, I just wanted to die so bad.” Miraculously, as he was speeding, he felt a voice tell him to stop, and to think about the family he will leave behind. This made him stop, and make sure he never does anything like this again.
His depression led him to abuse drugs and alcohol, as it was a temporary pain relief. He tried to escape the problem, rather than battle it which made things even worse for him, as he put on a lot of weight, and was rendered unfit for boxing. Also, failing a drug test, and having to pay over 1 million pounds to his old promoter in a legal case. It seemed Tyson Fury was finished, and he would never recover.
Recovery
However, Fury began his redemption, and decided to make a comeback by coming back to boxing, He began training in order to lose the weight he had put on and meditating in order to be able to control his thoughts and clear his mind. This also helped with his discipline, as it made him be able to be calmer, and mentally stronger. He came back, looking in an even better shape than before he left, and this also reflected in his performances.
Tyson Fury then fought his depression head on, and returned to boxing in a better form, reclaiming his world championship belts.
Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey is a famous actor, and comedian who was at the top of his career in the 90s and has begun his resurgence into acting again. Despite his talent, and success, he was suffering from severe depression. He was also prescribed Prozac from a doctor (Prozac is an antidepressant tablet).
Jim Carrey had a condition called ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder). ADHD makes you struggle with paying attention to things and being prone to mood swings. ADHD can lead to depression, as it could lead to struggles in all types of areas. For example, difficulty concentrating in school, or a workplace, could lead to constant punishments.
Also, Jim had a hard time growing up due to his family having financial struggles, which made him struggle with school, and ultimately made him leave. At a young age, his father had lost his job, and sunk the family down so deep, they had to live in their van, due to being unable to afford the rent. At one point they were even living in a tent outside of a family member’s house.
This made Jim have to work and study at the same time. Overtime, studying would get a lot harder, and his grades started slipping. He worked as a janitor, and even in the workplace, came more issues. Despite a relentless 8-hour shift alongside school, he had to deal with people, purposefully, excreting in the sinks, and making things harder for him. Eventually, he would perform stand-up routines around the area, which took off, and saved him, and ultimately brought him to success.
Having ADHD and suffering with homelessness could have long lasting effects on any person, despite their success.
So how did Jim Carrey battle it?
Recovery
There were a lot of factors that helped him cope with his depression, and ultimately made him overcome it. He came to terms with the fact that he would have to live with it. With this in mine, he knew he must be able to be in control, so it would not consume him again. He claimed it helps him deal with the hard times he has.
Also, staying away from drugs and alcohol helped him a lot, as he was able to keep his body clean of them. Alcohol and drugs only worsen your health, and therefore you are better without them. These things make things worse, so you are better off without them.
Jim also tries to make sure he is constantly working, and making the most out of his time, as it helps him relieve his mind from depression, and therefore is able to find relief when progressing in his life. However, this does affect you, as you could start getting stressed, and feel like you’re overworking.
