Afterlife: The Netflix Show’s Contribution To Mental Health

2 Mins read

What Is The Series About?

The series is based on the lead character, Tony Johnson who is played by Ricky Gervais. Tony Johnson has mental health issues ever since his wife, Lisa Johnson (Kerry Godliman) passed away from cancer. Because of his mental health, his behaviour has changed. He started to make sarcastic remarks and mean jokes, been having suicidal thoughts, and misusing alcohol. He was also involved with Julian Kane (Tim Plester) who used to post The Tambury Gazette paper and had drug addiction.

It was difficult for Tony to cope with the suffering, but he has had plenty of help and guidance from others, especially his brother-in-law, Matt (Tom Basden). However, in the show, Tony also socialised with the therapist. Usually you would think the therapist would be a great listener and support system, as well as guiding the client. But, the therapist was the complete opposite. He truly didn’t show that he cared and didn’t give good advice, as Matt also had experience with him in season 2.

Overall, not just Tony who was struggling with mental health issues. There were also the brother-in-law, employers at the Gazette, and outsiders he socialised with. It was extremely difficult to manage situations on their own. But, when communicating with each other, and offering the guidance and support, gradually they would feel positive and look forward to new opportunities and people. Also, having that sense of relief and light reflecting on them and their life.

Does ‘AfterLife’ Series Make People Feel Aware Of Mental Health?

When watching the series, it shows you the clear light of reality. There are many situations and challenges that every individual has to face in daily life. It also makes you think to yourself that you are surrounded by loved ones who care deeply for you. And willing to give you all the support and guidance you need. Yes, the show also displays the fear of losing someone you love, feeling lonely, and struggling with issues. But, you can overcome these issues and talk to someone about it.

However, parents need to be aware if their child is watching the show, and may be going through something themselves. Be there for your child and give them the support. Parental guidance is extremely important. You may feel uncomfortable and think it’s not safe for your child to watch a type of show or movie that shows mental health, violence, or even suicide and self-harming. Although, if they really want to watch the series, then you should watch it beside them.

Support

You are not alone, and not capable to face your issues by yourself. Open up to your close friends and family, when you are ready to talk. Seek for help, because you truly deserve it.

Book an appointment with your local GP or your mental health specialist. They will offer you support and guide you on what the situation is and what to do to prevent you from all the suffering.

If you’ve been self-harming or having suicidal thoughts, ask for an ambulance or the nearest A&E.
